About the artist

Michael Richardson was born in 1943 in North London. His fathers illness forced the family to move out of London after the war ended to Ipswich in Suffolk, a particularly pleasant rural county in the South East of England also known as "Constable Country".

He was encouraged to take further art education on leaving Ipswich School in 1960 and trained at Ipswich School of Art as a sculptor and painter 1960-1962. At this time a keen interest in sailing led him into a career in the marine industry where he specialised in sail design and manufacture.

During this period he maintained his interest in painting as a hobby and returned to full time painting in 1992.

As a result of his marine industry experience he is drawn to subjects containing boats and his knowledge of the way they are designed and built lends authenticity to his marine work.

A prolific output, mainly in watercolour has found homes all over the globe, a large number of which are in America.

He has organised several overseas painting holidays for other artists in France Belgium and Holland. He has also traveled extensively painting throughout Europe, The Far East, Indonesia, New Zealand, Australia and the USA

His main current interest is in plein air painting enjoying the challenge of working fast in all weathers in front of the subject.

He is a member of the Wapping Group of Artists, probably the oldest outdoor painting society in the UK which numbers several of the most prominent British  Landscape and Marine Artists including Trevor Chamberlain, Fred Beckett, Paul Banning, Bert Wright,.Roger Dellar and Geoff Hunt

"Evening Light, Lanvallay"
The battlements and the viaduct at Dinan tower over the little vilage of Lanvallay on the canalised River Rance, Britanny. The angled evening light makes a delightful composition.

"Seascape, off St malo"
This was painted in about half an hour on the deck of the ferry as I was leaving Le Havre, using a hand held pochade box in an attempt to capture the light effect with the cloud shadows and wave shapes.

"June Afternoon, Dinard"
A weak sun began to poke through the clouds as the bather returned to the promenade. He made a fine focal point for this beach scene.

"The Poppy Field Lovers"
The title for this painting was provided by the young couple who indulged in quite a different "en plein air" activity only twenty yards from where I was painting! Quite single mindedly I refused to be distracted!

"Poppies, Poppies"
This dense population of poppies appeared this year in the village of Acol in the Isle of Thanet. Strangely there had been almost none the year before which appears to lay to rest the theory that they inhabit old battlefields, thriving on the iron rich soil. With the scent and the buzzing of insects it is an intense experience to spend a couple of hours in a field like this on a humid June afternoon!

"Varnishing Day"

The varnishing day at the RA is quite an event! Starting with a procession down Piccadilly to St James's Church for the artist's service followed by a champagne reception and finger lunch. Although the traditional reason for the day was not forgotten, (there were ample tall stepladders in every room) I did not actually observe any varnishing being done! It was wonderful to see all the other artists, many of whose work I have admired over the years. Exhibits ranged from the "little gems" in the Weston Room to the enormous Hockney photographs and a fantastic King Kong sculpture made entirely from coathangers! As always the highlights for me were the wonderful Ken Howard studio interiors!

"Strolling Home"
Those who know me well know that I nearly always paint at least two images from the same spot and this one shows the street leading away from the Whistle Stop in the other direction. Although it is tiny it talks of a warm summer evening after the crowds have left the seaside town behind to relax and recover for the onslaught the following day!

"The Whistle Stop"
I was enticed by the lights and the shadowy area under the railway bridge and the figures moving in and out of the cafe.

The muddy waters of the River Medway contrast with the sheen of the wet mud around these barges at Hoo St Werburgh.

"Dusk, Tower Bridge"
In the early evening the backlighting throws the bridge into silhouette and the wash from the river traffic sparkles on the water.
